TITLE: Senior Clinical Embryologist
REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor’s Degree in Clinical Human Embryology, Reproductive Biology, Microbiology, Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a closely related field and 5 years of experience as Clinical Human Embryologist or in a related occupation; OR Master’s in Clinical Embryology, Microbiology, Reproductive Biology, or a closely related field.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Documented completion of training or certification from a recognized professional organization in advanced assisted reproduction laboratory techniques.
JOB DUTIES: Prepare sperm specimens using techniques selected according to semen parameters, specimen characteristics, and intended procedure. Extract and prepare surgically retrieved sperm for use in insemination procedures. Recover oocyte-cumulus complexes from follicular aspirates and perform oocyte assessment and denudation. Perform conventional in vitro fertilization, intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) and fertility preservation procedures. Identify, document, and report abnormal or clinically relevant characteristics of follicular aspirates, oocytes, sperm specimens, and embryos. Perform fertilization assessment, including pronuclear evaluation, and monitor embryo development through cleavage and blastocyst stages. Grade embryos using stage-specific morphology criteria, including cell number, symmetry, fragmentation, expansion, inner cell mass (ICM), and trophectoderm (TE) morphology. Use time-lapse monitoring systems, when available, for morphokinetic embryo assessment. Perform laser-assisted embryo micromanipulation procedures, including assisted zona hatching and trophectoderm biopsy. Perform embryo transfer procedures, including embryo preparation, catheter loading, physician handoff, and post-transfer catheter check. Perform oocyte and embryo vitrification, and warming according to various media and device specific protocols. Manage cryostorage records, specimen location tracking, and storage documentation. Prepare, verify, and coordinate shipment and receipt of biological specimens, including specimen packaging, temperature-control requirements, dry ice and hazard labeling, and chain-of-custody documentation. Perform and document patient and specimen identity verification, traceability, and manual witnessing procedures, including second-person verification at critical handling steps. Maintain laboratory safety practices for biohazardous materials, sharps, cryogenic materials, hazardous chemicals, exposure-control procedures, and incident reporting. Provide technical and scientific oversight of IVF laboratory procedures as technical supervisor. Collaborate with the Laboratory Director to implement current and advanced laboratory techniques, technologies, and protocol improvements. Troubleshoot laboratory procedures, workflow issues, culture conditions, and equipment concerns. Resolve technical problems and ensure appropriate corrective action. Perform and document quality-control (QC) activities and monitor parameters for equipment, materials, culture conditions, and procedures. Complete proficiency testing and external quality-assurance (EQA) activities Maintain practice in alignment with applicable Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) requirements, U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, College of American Pathologists (CAP) accreditation standards, The Joint Commission (TJC) accreditation standards, American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) professional guidance. Maintain Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) compliant handling of patient, cycle, specimen, and genetic testing information. Identify training needs and provide procedure-specific training for junior laboratory personnel on embryology techniques, standard operating procedures, documentation standards, QC activities, and laboratory workflows. Manage Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)-required assisted reproductive technology (ART) cycle reporting, including case tracking, data entry, outcome follow-up, data validation, discrepancy resolution, and submission. Collaborate with reproductive endocrinologists, clinicians, nurses, genetic counselors, and external laboratories.
